Avoid Firms without Licensed Professionals
Many tax preparation firms use non-licensed professionals.  They hire indiviudals with fictitious titles such as “tax analyst”, “tax specialist", or "tax consultant".  They may identify themselves as tax specialists, but in most cases, they are unlicensed and untrained in handling complex tax situations.  Without a license, they have nothing to risk by using unlawful tax deductions and credits.  Many are commission based employees with their own best interest in mind.  Please be sure to ask who your tax consultation is with and which professional license they hold.  There are only three professionals who can speak with the IRS on your behalf; tax attorneys, certified public accountants, and enrolled agents.  These professional can give you a better understanding of your tax situation.
